Would you propagate from these plants or buy liners that were propagated from them?

If you would.......think again!

Every year propagators and growers experience economic losses due to pathogens and pests in stock plants and liners that have a few blemishes here and there. Often plants grown under ideal conditions do not exhibit obvious symptoms until they are stressed by such factors as propagation, temporary drought, or dormancy. These plants may exhibit slow growth, unsightly lesions or death after a period of time making the nursery manager feel that he has done something wrong when the problem really stems from a diseased stock plant.

Not only are obvious plant losses incurred but there is far more damage to your nursery's reputation.

Producing healthy plants is a must for any nursery that is concerned about the bottom line.

Tissue culture is an important tool in providing clean stock to propagators by:

  • Eradicating viruses, nematodes, bacteria and fungus from stock plants using techniques such as meristem culture if no "clean" plants can be found.
  • Maintaining disease free plant material in vitro and therefore away from pathogens and insect vectors.
  • Providing stock plants to nurseries from indexed cultures on a schedule that best suits their production and labor needs.
